Puerta del Sol

The Puerta del Sol is one of Madrid’s best-known and busiest spots, regarded as the ‘kilometre zero’ of Spain’s radial motorways. It is a key hub for the city’s social life and the setting for such popular celebrations as New Year’s Eve.

Trivia:

• The famous clock on the Real Casa de Correos has been striking the hours since 1866.
• The statue of the Bear and the Strawberry Tree has not always stood in its current location.
• The square’s name comes from an ancient sun painted on one of its medieval gates.
