Bilbao’s Old Town

The Casco Viejo is the historic heart of Bilbao and the place where it all began in the 14th century. This area is also known as ‘Las Siete Calles’ (The Seven Streets), as these were the first streets to form the medieval centre of the town. Strolling around here is the best way to get a feel for the city’s character.

The narrow streets are lined with bars, small shops, markets and historic buildings. It’s also the best place to soak up the Bilbao atmosphere and, of course, to sample the famous pintxos. Among the highlights are Plaza Nueva, one of the liveliest spots for a bite to eat or a drink, and the Mercado de la Ribera, one of the largest covered markets in Europe.

It’s an area to explore at a leisurely pace, wandering the streets and letting yourself be carried along. In just a few minutes, you’ll go from elegant squares to streets brimming with local life. Whether by day or by night, there’s always a lively atmosphere.
