hero of city detail

Bilbao

Bilbao is synonymous with hard-fought football and is also a destination that every football fan wants to visit at least once a season. A delightful city, balancing its historic charm with contemporary flair, and one that is utterly devoted to Athletic Club. Its stadium, San Mamés, is regarded as ‘The Cathedral’ of Spanish football. And that can’t be a coincidence.

Llegar y moverse

By plane

The main gateway by air is Bilbao Airport, situated some 12 kilometres from the city centre. It is the most important airport in northern Spain and operates domestic and international flights with regular connections to cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, London, Paris, Frankfurt and Amsterdam.

Train

If you’re travelling by train, Bilbao has several railway stations connecting the city to various destinations. The main one is Bilbao-Abando Station, from where Renfe’s long-distance and high-speed trains operate. From here, there are direct connections to cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, Zaragoza and Valladolid. In addition, Bilbao-Concordia Station, situated directly opposite Abando, is the terminus for metre-gauge trains connecting Bilbao with various towns in northern Spain via the Renfe Cercanías and Euskotren networks.

Road

Bilbao is well connected by road to the rest of the Basque Country and to the main cities in the north. Motorways and dual carriageways provide quick links to places such as San Sebastián, Vitoria-Gasteiz and Santander, primarily the AP-8 and the AP-68.

Public transport

Once in Bilbao, getting around the city is easy thanks to a very well-organised public transport network. The most widely used system is the Bilbao Metro, which opened in 1995 and was designed by the architect Norman Foster. The Euskotren Tranbia runs through the modern part of the city and connects areas such as the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the city centre and the San Mamés area. The network is complemented by Bilbobus city buses and Bizkaibus intercity buses.
