Statue of Iribar

A statue of José Ángel Iribar welcomes fans at the foot of San Mamés, on the esplanade where it meets Calle Licenciado Poza, next to Luis Briñas. A legend of Athletic, LaLiga and Spanish football, Iribar is more than just a footballer – he is a symbol.

‘Txopo’ holds the record for the most appearances for Athletic Club (614), made between 1962 and 1979; he is a two-time Copa del Rey winner (1969 and 1973) and a European Cup winner in 1964. He remains the eternal number one for Athletic fans.

Before entering the Rojiblancos’ stadium or whilst visiting the surrounding area, one must pay tribute to the legendary goalkeeper by visiting his patinated bronze statue, which stands two metres and ten centimetres tall.
