Artxanda Funicular

To understand Bilbao’s geography and enjoy a magnificent view of the city, climbing Mount Artxanda is one of the best experiences. The easiest way to do this is on the historic Artxanda Funicular, which opened in 1915.

The journey takes just three minutes, but in that time the funicular climbs from the city centre to the hill overlooking Bilbao. At the top, you’ll find viewing points offering perfect views of the estuary, the Guggenheim, the city centre and the mountains surrounding the city.

The upper area also features parks, restaurants and peaceful footpaths for a stroll. Many locals head up simply to have a drink and enjoy the views.

It’s a short but highly recommended visit, especially at sunset or in the evening, when the city lights up.
