Puertas de Tierra
The iconic Puerta de Tierra (18th century) bears witness to the new city walls that replaced the medieval defences dating from before the 16th century, which had been rendered obsolete by the city’s expansion. Although demolition was originally considered, they are now listed as Assets of Cultural Interest and symbolise the divide between old and new Cádiz.
The marble portal in the centre was designed by José Barnola in 1756 as a religious altarpiece. During carnival, the fortification is crowned by statues of the god Momo and the witch Piti.
