Nuevo Colombino Stadium

Until 1892, the original Huelva Recreation Club played its matches in front of the Vega Larga gas factory (where the current Plaza de Toros de la Merced is located). After this, it had its own ground on the old road to Seville, in the area where the IV Centenary of the Discovery of America was to be celebrated. In 1957, it moved to the Isla Chica neighbourhood and for almost half a century, the Estadio Municipal (Estadio Colombino since 1987) was home to Recreativismo. In 2011, Real Club Recreativo de Huelva moved to its current home, the Nuevo Colombino, erected next to the estuary where football had originally begun to be played in Huelva, in the port, even before the birth of the Decano.

Standing in the Pescadería neighbourhood, overlooking the Odiel, it’s a modern stadium for 21,000 spectators, which is much more than a sports ground. Because of its location, its link with the oldest football club in Spain, and the historical testimonies that are displayed there, the Nuevo Colombino is a symbol of the beautiful game.

It was inaugurated on 8 November 2001, with a match between Recreativo and Newcastle (which Recre won 3-0). Shortly afterwards, it hosted a match between Spain and Mexico (1-0). Since then, the Nuevo Colombino stadium has hosted matches in the First Division, Second Division, Second Division B, Second RFEF and Third RFEF, as well as a historic Copa del Rey semi-final and up to 19 editions of the Trofeo Colombino.

In addition to the 21,670 seats and 32 private boxes to watch Recre, the Nuevo Colombino houses the club’s offices, the official shop and the Museum of the Decano of Spanish football.

HOW TO GET THERE
The Nuevo Colombino stadium is located next to the Huelva estuary, on the Avenida del Decano del Fútbol Español, just a few minutes’ walk from the city centre and far enough away to avoid parking problems. By private car it can be reached via the H-30. There are also city bus stops on lines 1, 2, 5, 6, 7 and 8.
