Santiago Cathedral, Bilbao
Santiago Cathedral is Bilbao’s main place of worship and one of the city’s most important historic buildings. It is situated in the heart of the Old Town and forms part of the Northern Way of St James, which explains why it is dedicated to the apostle.
Its origins date back to the 14th century and its predominant architectural style is Gothic, although it has undergone several renovations over the centuries. The exterior is relatively understated, but the interior stands out for its elegance and the proportions of its naves. The Gothic cloister is also worth a visit, as it is one of the most peaceful spots in the historic centre.
The cathedral is a fine example of how Bilbao combines tradition and history with its modern image today. Furthermore, its location makes it a very convenient stop whilst you’re exploring the streets of the old town.
A visit is usually brief, but it offers an interesting insight into the city’s religious and urban history.
