Neptune’s Fountain

The Neptune Fountain is the venue where Atlético de Madrid’s successes are celebrated, reflecting the combative and down-to-earth nature of its supporters. Neptune, the Roman god of the sea, is depicted wielding a trident whilst standing on a shell-shaped chariot, surrounded by sea creatures. Like the Cibeles Fountain, this fountain was designed in the 18th century by Ventura Rodríguez as part of the plan to beautify the Salón del Prado, giving it considerable historical and artistic value within Madrid’s urban landscape.

In addition to its footballing connection, Neptune represents the city’s mythological tradition and Enlightenment past, serving as a landmark that has gained social and emotional significance over time.

Trivia:

• Neptune’s trident was not always visible: for a time it was hidden due to restoration work and damage.
• Atlético de Madrid did not always celebrate at the Neptune Fountain; until 1991, its supporters celebrated at the Cibeles Fountain.
• The Neptune Fountain was initially intended to symbolise Spain’s maritime power, at the height of the Age of Enlightenment.
