Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba

The Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba is one of the most outstanding monuments of Spain’s historical and artistic heritage. Its construction began in 785 on the orders of Emir Abd al-Rahman I on the site of an ancient Visigothic basilica, and it was extended in successive phases during the period of the Caliphate of Córdoba. The building is characterised by its vast prayer hall supported by a forest of columns and two-tone horseshoe arches, as well as by its refined geometric and plant-inspired decoration.

Following the Christian conquest of the city in 1236, the building was consecrated for Catholic worship and, in the 16th century, a Renaissance-style nave was erected inside, giving it its current appearance. This unique combination of Islamic and Christian elements makes the Mosque-Cathedral an exceptional example of the architectural and cultural evolution of Al-Andalus. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984, it is today one of the city’s main tourist attractions and a symbol of Córdoba’s historical identity.
