Arriaga Theatre
Opposite the Old Town and next to the estuary stands the Arriaga Theatre, one of Bilbao’s most elegant buildings. It was opened in 1890 and is named after the Bilbao-born composer Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga, known as the ‘Spanish Mozart’.
Its neo-Baroque architecture is clearly reminiscent of the Paris Opera House, with a highly ornate façade and an imposing presence next to the Arenal Bridge. Throughout its history, it has suffered fires and floods, but it has always been restored and remains one of the city’s most important cultural centres.
If you get the chance, it’s well worth going inside to see the interior: a classic theatre auditorium, elegant décor and a very special atmosphere. The theatre stages opera, dance, theatre and concerts throughout the year.
Even if you’re not attending a performance, popping in to have a look and taking a stroll along the nearby Paseo del Arenal is a highly recommended stop on any visit to Bilbao.
