The historic quarter of Vegueta

The cobbled streets, the stately homes, the Cathedral, the chapels and churches, Santa Ana Square, the Museo Canario, the Casa de Colón… Everything exudes history in the city’s original neighbourhood. A stroll through Vegueta takes us to the ‘Perros de Santa Ana’, a group of sculptures at the foot of the Cathedral that is one of the city’s icons; to the Town Hall, situated in Santa Ana Square itself; and to the chapel and San Antonio Abad Square, where the city was founded over five centuries ago. The walk takes us through its narrow streets to charming spots such as the squares of Pilar Nuevo, San Agustín, Santo Domingo and Espíritu Santo.

Trivia:
– On three of the four voyages Christopher Columbus made to the New World, the explorer stopped off on the island; the first time was to repair the rudder of one of his ships. In this way, he put Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on the map as a gateway to the Americas.
– There are many reasons to visit the Cathedral of Santa Ana, including admiring its vaults, whose design is reminiscent of the palm trees so characteristic of the city.
– The best-known room in the Museo Canario is the René Verneau Room, where a large collection of skulls and several mummies of the island’s ancient inhabitants is on display.
